Featured speaker: Dr. Sundiata Keita Cha-Jua on "Selling Soul City: Floyd B. McKissick Sr., Black Power, Black Capitalism, and His Alliance with Conservative Republicans"
Dr. Cha-Jua analyzes the career of Floyd Bixler McKissick Sr.—lawyer, organizer, the executive director of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and a key figure in developing the political strategy of the Black Power Movement.
By examining the strange alliance McKissick forged with conservative Republican presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford to fund Soul City, his “all-Black” city in North Carolina, Dr. Cha-Jua explores a neglected theme in Civil Rights and Black Power movement scholarship: the relationship among Black Power, federal support for Black capitalism, and the origins of contemporary Black conservatism.
Dr. Cha-Jua is Associate Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
