UCSB Departments of Black Studies & Chicana and Chicano Studies presents:
Maria Esther Hammack, Ph.D. student at University of Texas at Austin.

While histories of the Underground Railroad often center Canadian freedom destinations, thousands of Black Americans fled South to claim freedom in Mexican spaces. This talk will overview Mexico's process of abolition and Black peoples' liberation pursuits to showcase how Mexican freedom was engineered and how it materialized for Black freedom seekers. It will also showcase the significance of Black liberation and Mexican freedom in the histories of American slavery, abolition, and emancipation.
