The CBSR has been a consistent supporter of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration, including an essay and poetry contest, organized by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara. In recent years the celebration has begun with a kickoff event at UCSB, with a gathering at the Eternal Flame followed by a walk together across campus.
