Dr. Margarita Bianco: A Vision of Equity: Growing and Sustaining a Diversified Teacher Workforce

In this interactive presentation, Dr. Bianco will share her vision for how to achieve equity in schools by growing and sustaining a diverse teacher workforce. She will present findings from the research literature on GYO programs as well as share short videos of students in her high school Pathways2Teaching program as they discuss the urgent need for a community responsive and diverse teacher workforce. The presentation will also address challenges school districts face with the retention of Teachers of Color and why. This session will provide participants with an overview of important components of GYO programs, videos of students in the Pathways2Teaching program, and highlight the successes and challenges in developing a Grow Your Own program.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Margarita Bianco, Associate Professor in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Bianco is also the Founder of Pathways2Teaching, a nationally recognized model GYO program designed to encourage high school students from marginalized groups to enter the educator workforce as a way to disrupt the educational inequities they’ve experienced. Dr. Bianco’s research interests include strategies to recruit, support, and retain a diverse educator workforce and develop Grow Your Own (GYO) teacher programs. Her commitment to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice is a unifying theme that is interwoven throughout all aspects of her work with developing/ preparing culturally responsive teachers.
